Phobias and Fear: are they the same thing? + 10 Phobias you’ve never even heard of!

Hey everyone! Welcome back to another post on What are you up to during the Lockdown??

Today’s post is a little different. It’s about Phobias.

We’ve all heard of phobias: Claustrophobia, Hydrophobia, Arachnophobia. But what really are phobias?

By definition: “A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation.” But what does this really mean? Is a phobia the same as fear? Let’s check it out.

Are Phobias and Fear the same thing?

As a matter of fact, the answer is NO. Despite the common misconception that they are the same thing, phobias and fear are different. A phobia is more intense than a fear. Let’s say for example that you have Arachnophobia. It would be fear if you saw it in your room but refused to touch it and probably backed out of the room. But it would be a phobia if you completely refused to enter that particular room in the first place. The same works with Claustrophobia. Fear if you are in a room and feel as if the rooms are closing in on you and you decide to leave, but phobia if you avoid getting into a closed room in the first place. Fear is a safety mechanism whereas a phobia is an irrational fear.

So now that we’ve cleared the misconception. We should also know how to get rid of these phobias. The most effective method suggested by most professionals is to face your fear. By facing your phobia one step at a time, you can get rid of the fear and eventually the phobia too.

Here are 5 most common phobias that you’ve probably heard of:

Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia is the phobia (irrational fear) of confined spaces.

Arachnophobia

  1. Nice post! I actually have a weird phobia that has absolutely nothing tied to it. Its just a phobia thatโ€™s always been there. Mine is of pool drains, pool jets, pool lights, and pools that are empty. Theres not a specific phobia name for it but people who have this phobia often classify themselves under submechanophobia which is the fear of submerged man made objects!

    1. Thank you! Oh really? This is the first time I’ve heard of this! Thanks a lot for sharing! It’s quite interesting to talk about phobias! I’m not sure if I have any phobias, but I’m very scared of spiders!
